Jennifer's Bodies 2017 Official Selection - Gigi Saul Guerrero's Madre De Dios, Starring Tristan Risk!

For many years, Gigi Saul Guerrero has been a personal favourite of mine.  She is one bad ass chick and one hell of a filmmaker to boot!  

This year I shall be showing her Tristan Risk starring short Madre De Dios.  

My mate Finnie summed this up perfectly....."Like the Exorcist on crack!"  I have to agree with him.  Haha.  If you have seen any of Gigi's prior work, you will have a pretty good idea of just how accurate he is going to be!  Haha. 

Tristan Risk is obviously one of our ultimate darlings in horror, and Gigi, along with her Luchagore team have most definitely joined the party.  There is so much talent here.  Like, every time I watch From Dusk Till Dawn, I keep thinking, we need Gigi directing dammit!!  From Dusk Till Dawn is easily one of my favourite shows.....Gigi is THAT awesome!!  Check out my interview with the lovely lady from 2014 to get a better idea, and to also kinda geek over how far she has come in such a short period of time.  Gigi = LOVE!! <3

Below is the list of short films that shall be screening at Jennifer's Bodies in on the 19th of February 2017 at Blackfriars in Glasgow in association with Popcorn Horror.

On top of these films, due to knowing I have a large audience that won't have seen a whole load of films, I am going to be doing "Blasts from the Past" section, where I screen a few films that I have previously shown over the years, but that I love so much, and that I think fit in so perfectly in today's climate, that I believe them to be truly important pieces of work!  Anyone who has watched these films before, I am sure will be psyched to get the chance to check them out again.  

I am still confirming the feature, but I am going for something really awesome and will let you know as soon as possible.

My precious, most beloved little Mexican of bad ass filmmaking is one of the finalists for Miss Shock Stock and I'm asking y'all to go vote for her....it can be your Valentine's gift to me.  :)  

Anyone who follows anything I do, will know that since I discovered Gigi, I have done everything I can to make sure people realise the immense amount of talent that this chicka has to offer.

Jennifer's Bodies 2015 Line Up - Short Films Category - Luchagore Productions Gigi Saul Guerrero's El Gigante, Based on the Shane McKenzie Graphic Novel, Muerte Con Carne!

 At last year's event, I got to introduce people to Mexican director Gigi Saul Guerrero when I showed her ABC's of Death entry M is for Matador, as well UK premiered her outstanding Dia De Los Muertos, part of Lex Ortega's Mexico Barbaro anthology. 

I was so fucking stoked and excited when I discovered Gigi, I even got my makeup artist Hayley Tinline, to do my face all sugar skull'ed up for day one.  :)

Anyhoooooo.....it is with great pleasure that I will be once again screening a film from Gigi, and her partners in crime at Luchagore Film, Raynor Shima and Luke Bramley with El Gigante.  This time with an added Mexican flavour....Mr Shane McKenzie...writer of the original graphic novel Muerte Con Carne, and a fucking mad genius of twisted taco~ness!!

Get On Board the Awesome Kickstarter Campaign to Bring Shane McKenzie's El Gigante to Life, from the Amazing Gigi Saul Guerrero and her Team at Luchagore Productions!

Kickstarter is a joyous place, filled with many a funky project that one can get on board.  One of those projects right now is one that I guarantee you will NOT want to miss!! :)  

The very first moment that I came across Vancouver based Mexican director Gigi Saul Guerrero, I knew I had found someone truly unique and special.  Whilst only 23, Gigi has the talent of someone far beyond her years.  And an AMAZING creative team too.  Working in Vancouver, with some of the most awesome guys and gals around...including make-up/fx chicks Carolyn Williams and Amy-Leigh Poitras, both of whom worked with one of my bestest friends in the world, Jennifer Campbell, on her award winning short Bruised, Gigi is proving to be a Mexican on a mission! :)

When I screened two of Gigi's shorts, Dia De Los Muertos and M is for Matador at Jennifer's Bodies last month, they went down an absolute treat!  Not only is there a wicked sense of twisted humour to these films, they are gore~geously shot/edited....you name it....they're just so fucking good!  Don't just take my word for it though, here's what Starburst Magazine had to say about them - 

"Next up were two shorts from 23-year-old Mexican prodigy Gigi Saul Guerrero. Both had a distinctive style highly reminiscent of early Robert Rodriguez, in particular Dia de los Muertos, where “Life is a bitch and you gotta be a bigger bitch than her.” With its grindhouse aesthetic, pounding guitars, dive bar sleaze, gorgeous girls, greasy guys and a metric fuckton of condensed badassery, it could easily be a deleted scene from Desperado.

Such is the strength of Dia de los Muertos, it has been included in Mexican anthology México Bárbaro after Guerrero’s previous short (and next in the line up) M Is For Matador got her noticed. Entered in the open contest for The ABCs of Death 2, its absence of dialogue, grisly close ups and story of a murderous bullfighter told in the confines of a brief running time made it perfect for the anthology sequel. While not the overall winning entry, it was however selected for The ABCs of Death 1.5, a compilation of 26 runner-up entries (to give some perspective, there were 541 submissions)."

I was so fucking impressed with Dia De Los Muertos, that I decided to get my make up artist Hayley Tinline to sugar skull me up in honour of this wicked little short!  That's how cool it is!  I well wanted to be a Mexican stripper all sugar skulled up, moooahahaha!! :) 

The project that the ever so rad team at Luchagore Productions are working on now, is an adaptation of Shane McKenzie's graphic novel, El Gigante.

When Fangoria writer John Skipp read the novel, he had THIS to say -

“And I hope to f*ck that if somebody makes a film out of this thing – and somebody should– they’re smart and thoughtful and hard-working enough to include all the savory spices that make it such a far-better-than-you-had-any-right-to-expect kickass multicultural low-rent gutter sonofabitch.”

Well, John...I can absofuckinglutely say, that if anyone can make this into a brilliantly demented Mexican gorefest, it's Miss Gigi and her Luchagore guys!  Seriously....just check out the rest of her work!!  

Readers of my blog will also be aware that Gigi is so awesomely talented, that she has been selected to be part of the kick ass Mexican anthology Mexico Barbaro, alongside some fucking cool, and insanely talented Mexicans!  

Now unfortunately, unless you can catch it at a festival screening, you're going to have to wait until the release of Mexico Barbaro to see Dia De Los Muertos.  You can however check out the Luchagore YouTube channel for an idea of what you would be getting yourselves in for by getting on board this Kickstarter campaign, and check out the teaser for Dia De Los Muertos...it's gooood!!  I've also attached her ABC's of Death 1.5 winning entry M is for Matador, which again is stupid quantities of awesome! :)  

Both of these films were made on a low budget, which goes to show a huge amount of fucking talent, and that unlike in Hollywood...these guys make sure they get the most out of their money, which is another great reason to get on board.  Gigi is going to be a star, no fucking doubt about it!  World of horror, look out....Little Miss Mexico and her Luchador's are out to get ya! ;)

Amazing Exclusive Interview with Gigi Saul Guerrero - Part One - Talking About Her Inclusion into Mexican Anthology México Bárbaro!

Probably the most amazing thing about Women in Horror Month is the super awesome ladies I end up becoming friends with.  A recent friendship has blossomed between myself and Mexican born, award winning director/actress Gigi Saul Guerrero.  Gigi is one of the most talented chicks I've come across in a while, and at a mere 23 years old, this girl is already a force to be reckoned with.  Having just scored her inclusion into her THIRD anthology, México Bárbaro, an anthology that includes some of the most talented Mexican directors out there today; this girl has no plans of stopping!  

Although at the age of 13 she moved to....guess where.....Vancouver...although she would have been only 3 when The X Files started (EEEEEP!!!  Haha!!)...Gigi has never been one to forget her Mexican roots!  And god damn, she celebrates them with gore~geous pride!  

You can tell Gigi is a perfectionist...just take one look at her work and it's all there.  Even her first short, Dead Crossing...although she would have been only 19 when she did this, it really is better than a lot of more established directors.  And that's not the kind of praise I give away lightly either.  I see so much talent in this girl, and she's a feisty and fun little minx to boot!  

Down to the fact that I could literally pick this girl's brains for hours on end...I thought I'd break an interview down into segments, beginning with....México Bárbaro.  :)

So it is with great pleasure that we can talk about your inclusion into Mexican anthology, México Bárbaro, an anthology that looks to showcase the work of some truly talented Mexicans, both male AND female!  How did you first get on board the project, and had you completed Dia de los Muertos at that point?

I am extremely lucky to be a part of Mexico Barbaro. It was the most unexpected surprise!

How it came to be was because I made a short film with my team "LuchaGore Productions" for ABC'S OF DEATH 2 - "M is for Matador" (which was officially selected for ABC's of Death 1.5). 

Lex Ortega viewed the short and contacted me. He asked me what other short films I've done and I showed him my latest work "Dia de los Muertos" (Day of the Dead). He loved it, and he told me it is exactly what he is looking for his next big project - Mexico Barbaro. 

I flew to Mexico City to meet him, and the rest of the team and I was amazed to see who the rest of the talented directors were, such as Jorge Michel Grau; I couldn't believe I was in the same room with them! I showed my short and from that moment I was officially part of the team. 

As a patriotic Scottish girl, I know I am always looking out for the work of my fellow Scots.  It’s just how we roll yo!! ;)  If you want a total bad ass, holy fuck balls Scottish film as of late, look no further than FILTH! 

Anyhoo, I am also a HUGE fan of Mexican cinema...it’s probably my favourite foreign cinema (and most watched) next to German.  Admittedly this was probably helped by going through a serious Gael García Bernal phase starting around 2002, where I went out of my way to buy and watch all his movies, haha.  And obviously, once you come across directors such as Alejandro González Iñárritu, you never go back.  Amores Perros is one of the most brutally brilliant films I’ve ever seen, and then for him to go and make 21 Grams...that film is one of sheer beauty!!  Alfonso Cuarón is obviously another and is probably jointly responsible for my Gael García Bernal love as I saw Amores Perros and Y Tu Mamá También at around the same time.  And then he sealed the deal by making my favourite Harry Potter film...and the rest is history!  Then of course there’s Del Toro.  Haha.  Of recent years, when speaking indie Mexican directors, my favourite film has definitely been We Are What We Are, and so I am beyond psyched to get to see you part of a project with the brilliant Jorge Michel Grau.

Ummm.. Alejandro González Iñárritu, Cuaron and Del Toro are like… my heroes. I will do anything to meet them! And yes "Amores Perros" is an incredible film which is still on my list of top 5 films ever made.

I remember seeing We are What we are on Netflix when i was… maybe 19 or 20 years old and went nuts over it, since then I was obsessed with Jorge's work! 

Soooo, out of curiosity, just how familiar were you with the work of the guys that are involved with the project, and are there anyone name in particular that you were totally bouncing off the walls to get to work with? 

As I mentioned before I was shocked to see who was involved!! When Lex contacted my team and I the first question we asked was "who else is involved in Mexico Barbaro"… and well, I recognized almost all the names! Of course Jorge's name nearly name me faint when I saw his on the list… (actually I think I did end up fainting? haha!)

I love that the main guy behind México Bárbaro, Lex Ortega’s basic requirement is that every director is Mexican, and that each short looks at Mexican culture and heritage.  What was your inspiration for Dia de los Muertos, and was it an idea you had been sitting on for a while?  :)

I thought of the story since Two years ago, it was around the time of the Dia de los Muertos holiday, I realized I'd never seen the sugar skull used in a film. I grew up with it and always loved it. I was thinking of a way to use this beautiful and really sexy makeup. It's about a group of strippers who live in a sketchy border town (like Juarez), who come together to take revenge on their most abusive clients.  This is a subject I felt hadn't been covered in this way. It's usually some kind of authority figure, a policeman or such, who comes in to solve the murder or missing case of a Mexican woman. I wanted these women to take charge.  The women disguise their faces with the Day of the Dead makeup and go nuts. 

- My segment is called "Dia de los Muertos" created with LuchaGore Productions. 

"In a seedy strip club off Northern Mexico, a group of abused women find themselves bound together under the command of Doa Luz. On the celebratory night of Dia de los Muertos, the club known as “La Candelaria” welcome all sinful men who enter. Unbeknownst that’s this is no ordinary club, the men face much more than just a show."

When you came up with the idea for Dia de los Muertos, did you have any idea that it would go this far? 

I honestly never expected our film to get this far, I honestly just wanted to make something sexy, bloody and kick ass! I couldn't be more grateful for all the festivals we have won so far and now being part of something much bigger - Mexico Barbaro.

You are without a doubt one of the most fascinating women working in horror today and it’s been so cool seeing what you’ve already accomplished....and you’re only 23!!  Who were some of your main Mexican female influences growing up?

Without a doubt Salma Hayek. She is so talented, fierce and just not afraid to do anything. Her poise shows through the screen, and she is just an amazing woman. 

México Bárbaro isn't the only anthology project you have got your mittens into however.   You are totally nailing it at the moment with your anthology inclusions...and this makes me feel so proud both for and of you, and your whole creative team!  How does it feel to be part of The ABC's of Death 1.5, and World of Death?  

To be honest ABC'S of Death has been an anthology I have been following since the moment is started! When my team and I heard about the second competition happened we had to do. So only 3 weeks before the deadline we decided to go for it. It was the most incredible and stressful experience yet. We wanted "M is for Matador" to kick so much ass with little time to make it. It was an incredible opportunity because we won $1,000 for best short from a previous competition help in Vancouver called "Rio Theater's DEAD ON FILM FESTIVAL", so last minute decision we put 100% of our winning to Matador :)

Now being officially in ABC's of Death 1.5 feels like we accomplished what we wanted. We can be alongside other talented filmmakers, and if I didn't take the chance of trying the competition I would've never met Lex Ortega (pictured below).  Everything happened for a reason. :)

Even though I just met everybody from Mexico Barbaro in January I already have a fantastic connection with all of them. It's great to be part of a project where everybody has the same drive and passion to make it the best possible. I can't wait to see everybody's segments!

Mexican Anthology México Bárbaro Racking Up the Mexican Female Horror Directors with the Inclusion of Bautizo Director Laurette Flores!

Okay, so I'm totally fucking digging Lex Ortega right now.  Lex is the guy behind México Bárbaro, the new Mexican anthology which features a slew of amazing directors!!  Anyhoo, after my initial press release about the film where I credited the gore~geous Gigi Saul Guerreo, the not exactly difficult on the eyes himself, Lex, messaged me to inform me that not only does his anthology feature the work of  Madam Guerrero....it also features another totally bad ass chick, Laurette Flores.  :)

Laurette Flores's short Bautizo shall also be featured in the line up, which features a whole host of amazing Mexican guys as well.  And rather than total sexism, the only thing for sure that Lex is looking for, on top of being a super rad filmmaker of course, is that the person is a born and bred Mexican.  Which is pretty fucking sweet in my book!! :)  

I've just watched Bautizo having been given the version with the English subtitles and holy fuck!!  It's fucking brutal.  But not in an over the top way.  More just shocking in general.  Which makes it all the more effective. 

And random fact - it's highly entertaining that my favourite type of foreign language films are Mexican (followed by German), but yet I am highly allergic to capsaicin, the chemical found in chilli...a staple of the Mexican diet.  Haha.  I always find that Mexican films feel so raw, but are visually stunning at the same time.  There is some real talent out there and it's great to see a collection of up and coming, alongside established Mexican directors.

Jen and Sylvia Soska - It Takes More than Just Good Looks to Get Them to Where They Are Now. They Work Hard, and Still Have Fun!

Jen and Sylvia Soska are two extraordinary chicks with big hearts and a gore~geous sense of imagination.  Yes, they are two very attractive girls who like to play dress up. They are basically the female versions of the dudes that would play Dungeons and Dragons and then go to Comic Con dressed as Batman.  Yes their costumes are incredibly sexy...but they are also incredibly fucking nerdy!!  And when you combine just how big a comic book nerds the girls actually are...they are UBER NERDS!!!

But yet for this, they get totally slated.  People are basically berating them for how they dress...as nerds!!  I mean, what the fuck!?!?!!!  How the fuck do all you haters expect them to dress!?!  I think that there is so much bitterness and general playground cattiness aimed at them and quite frankly it pisses me off!!  Do you not think that they got picked on enough in the playground just because they were different.  And remember, this was back before when it was "cool" to be a nerd!  And you know something...if they were FAKE nerds, then yeah, all y'all nerds would have a reason to be pissed off at them.  But in fairness, they're two of the biggest fucking nerds I've ever met!  And I am a great big fucking nerd!!

 They have worked hard to get to where they are.  They have basically not stopped working for well over 5 years.  Any hot chick can wear a skimpy outfit.  Do you not think that Hollywood producers see enough of that coming through the system EVERY FUCKING DAY!!  Jen and Sylv went against that sleazeball system and raised the funds to make American Mary themselves, and wrote it as a statement against all the shite that goes on there!

They inspire women to embrace their sexuality, no matter how they look.  Yes, the whole twin thing might seem like a bit of a gimmick to some...but that's how they were born!!  That's how they naturally are.  They're not some product squeezed out of a production line.  So why people feel the need to constantly pick them apart, it is so pathetic.

And anyhoo...more to the fucking point...they have given the horror world Tristan fucking Risk.  That is reason enough to love them alone!!

Jen and Sylv don't only embrace the horror world that they have adored since they were creepy wee kids, they use their voice to help out some amazing causes too.  Their main one is to inspire people to donate blood, and for the past five years, every year they have released a new PSA to help them with their goal.  At the bottom of this post is the one from February 2012, when they had just finished filming American Mary and got some of the cast to join in the fun and get all bloodied up! :)  

Just because a girl has a personality and is attractive, it does not make her an incapable moron who does not deserve the same opportunities as the men in her field of work.  And let's face it...a lot of the complaints I'm seeing come from men!  Which to me just looks like jealousy.  Jen and Sylvia have personalities, and women are totally getting behind them.  Surely if we're going by standard conventions, if a girl is using merely her looks to get her places, then generally women are gonna call that shit out, and NOT support them!  That is not the case here.

For those that say how can they be feminists when they wear such provocative clothing?  Being a feminist isn't about what you wear...it's about what you DO, and Jen and Sylv have helped to give a voice to women within the horror community!  And they're actually making it into the boys club with their inclusion into The ABC's of Death 2, See No Evil 2 and various other cool projects.  As is Mexican Gigi Saul Guerrero, yet another hot, but insanely talented chick who I'm sure will have to deal with this kinda shit as well...just because she's young, attractive and outgoing!

When all is said and done, at the end of the day, it doesn't matter how fucking hot you are....if your film is shite, then people are gonna see through that straight away.  Jen and Sylv have slaved their arses off to get to where they are.  They  have put their OWN money into every single project they've worked on...including See No Evil 2.  Which another thing...they've been getting shit for doing that as well.  Has it not occurred to any of the haters that they actually WANTED to do this film.  The first film was just a fun slasher...so what is wrong with wanting to do an established fun slasher!?!  And to cast two of the most bad ass chicks in horror...Katherine Isabelle and Danielle Harris!!  If I had established myself as a director, and someone asked me to do a Friday the 13th sequel, I'd totally be on that bitch in a microsecond!  Because as silly as the films are...I fucking love Jason Voorhees, and think the films are awesome stupid fun!

There is way too much pretension within this genre sometimes; people forget that it's about having fun at the same time.  Did Joe Lynch get shit for doing Wrong Turn 2??  Not like this he sure didn't!! And Wrong Turn 2 is fucking awesome!!!  Because they brought in someone who was a huge fan of the genre and did something fun with it!  And in fact...I actually prefer it to the first one.  :)

At the end of the day, haters gonna hate.  I personally find it rather pathetic to be honest.  If you don't like them, fine.  Don't resort to name-calling and all the playground shite that comes along with it though.  These girls work hard and have fun whilst doing so.  Sounds like a pretty fucking sweet deal to me!  I think that Truth or Dare director Jessica Cameron sums it up perfectly...Haters Gonna Hate! Simples.  :)

Shane McKenzie's Muerte Con Carne to be Made into a Feature and Directed by My New Favourite Mexican, Gigi Saul Guerrero!

Gael Garcia Bernal, I'm afraid it's time for you to be knocked off your top spot as my favourite Mexican.....there's a new babe in town, and with this level of talent at such a young age, something tells me she's here to stay!  To be fair, he's held that spot for well over a decade so I'd say it's about time I had some fresh meat!  BWAH!!

So bye bye Bernal.....herrrrooooooo Gigi!! :)

Not only has she been confirmed for a shit load of anthologies featuring some of the most talented peeps around, I can now announce that she will be bringing Shane McKenzie's Muerte Con Carne to life in that glorious and beautiful way that she's already so fucking good at doing with her Luchagore Productions crew! :)
